One of the core visual elements that I build every painting on is narrative, the story details that come through layering and design.

Narrative and juicy tidbits are the way painters paint the words without words, the sprinkles of the cake of a painting. It also helps a painter create their version of distinction.

This dynamic 6 week course will teach the tips and strategies for creating personalities, abstract story building, and how to technically create complex details in costumery, setting, and accessories.

Toulouse Lautrec, Jan Van Eyck, and Klimt will be our art history focus as we learn what inspired them, how they worked, and how they processed narrative in their own practices.

What you'll learn

  • a lot about this history of costumery in theatre and the arts, and dive in to a great deal of fashion concepts and exploration.
  • how to develop our own character traits in portraits and figures, and use those traits to create more distinct artwork from unique points of view.
  • how narrative impacts humor or mystery as well as mood and emotion in painting.

What we will do together

  • move the line with a bit of writing, painting with words as well as pigment because words matter when we consider narrative and story.
  • move the line with a bit of writing, painting with words as well as pigment because words matter when we consider narrative and story.
  • use journals to work through skills and strategies as well as explore quick sketches with story building over a sequence.
  • consider and apply mixed media strategies as well as various textile options to give is a broad use of creative details.
  • study the masters and view how they interpreted costumery and narrative as well as embracing their own takes on details and visual surprise.
  • create unique prompts which will aid us in narrative building and tie that in to how it can give painters a unique take on subject matter and point of view…..and so much more.

“Ardith’s classes are truly fabulous. I love the mixture of process videos we can watch on our own time with the live sessions that allow for in the moment questions and impromptu demonstrations. Ardith really puts her whole heart into each class - it is easy to see that she genuinely loves the creative process and helping her students find their own way. I have never felt like her classes were about copying a particular look or style (like many project-based online courses). Instead, Ardith encourages her students to embrace their own style and apply the skills she so expertly teaches to further inform and develop their artistic individuality. I have loved every class I have taken from Ardith (both in person and online) and know that her guidance has had a tremendous impact on my growth as an artist.
